Freshman Learning Community 6
A Guided Exploration of the Teaching Profession

This learning community is specifically designed for students who are considering or have decided to pursue a major leading to teacher certification. Through both The University Experience and Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education, students will learn how to successfully navigate the AASU campus, be introduced to the profession of teaching, and explore the education programs of study available. Through English Composition I, the learning community members will develop the communication skills so vital to the profession.

The Courses

Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education—EDUC 2110
3 credit hours
Required for all education majors
Overview of the critical and contemporary issues facing the field of professional educators, including social and political contexts of educational settings in Georgia and the United States. Ten hours of directed field experience is required.

English Composition I—ENGL 1101
3 credit hours
Required for all students except those who earn a score of 3 or better on the AP English exam
A composition course focusing on skills required for effective writing in a variety of contexts, with emphasis on exposition, analysis, and argumentation, and also including introductory use of a variety of research skills.

The University Experience—AASU 1100
1 credit hour
An elective course highly recommended for all freshmen
Preparation for first-year students to become active, effective participants in the AASU experience. Topics include an introduction to campus resources and support services, familiarization with the career planning and major choice processes, an overview of campus policies and procedures, and an introduction to campus technologies.
